Metal Recycler Depends on Apex

Hydraulic (pre-compression) shears

Our Work

Apex were recently approached by a large metal recycling group to do complex repairs on essential ‘shearing’ equipment.

Shears are heavy-duty scrap devouring machines that are used for densifying scrap material either to maximise on haulage efficiency or to prepare material ready for the furnace or foundry. Hydraulic (pre-compression) shears process up to 70 tonnes of scrap metal per hour and have a cutting force of up to 2000 tonnes, making light work of a gruelling task.

Having this state of the art technology and advanced equipment is paramount in the recycling industry in processing scrap effectively, keeping operations running smoothly and efficiently and ensuring the highest quality products at the end of the process. It is vital that production continually meets the high demands of large scale quantities whilst additionally adhering to strict time frames. Minimising any potential downtime of machinery was an essential requirement of the Client and contributed significantly to the high success of this large-scale, complex project.

The repair process began with an initial consultation with the client to fully understand their needs and requirements. After consultation and following agreement from the client to proceed the procurement team then began the process of sourcing the highest quality components for this complex project; to repair 7 large rams, up to 12″ rods x 24″ bores over 6 meters long in accordance with OEM specifications. Apex’s expert machine shop and assembly teams then set to work re-honing scored bores, re-chroming damaged pistons and manufacturing new bearings for each of the seven damaged rams. After re-sealing the rams it was then time for them to undergo a vigorous test and inspection process ensuring they comply with current industry regulations and making them ready to receive a final fresh coat of paint before their speedy delivery back to the client to begin operations immediately.

Apex’s vast expertise and wealth of experience in the Hydraulics industry positions them strongly to fully meet the needs of their clients with both excellence and innovation. Their knowledge and understanding of the industry and their dedication to building strong customer relationships was key to ensuring this project was completed to the highest industry standards and as quickly as possible. The entire process from initial consultation to delivery of the repaired rams was just one month, keeping downtime to an absolute minimum and making this unique project yet another success.
