Improving Efficiency of Wind Turbine Installations

The MPI Discovery is a state of the art wind turbine installation vessel, which was purpose built to carry out the construction and installation of off-shore wind farms. This vessel was one of the first of its kind when it was launched in 2011, and as time has passed it has been possible to identify a few areas for improvement and development.

The Discovery is equipped with six jack-up legs to provide a stable construction platform, a main crane that lifts up to 1,000 tons and a full range of amenities for its 112 strong crew. It can operate up to 40 metres underwater, which is a full 5 metres deeper than its predecessor, and yet there is still more to be done.

Since one of the primary concerns of wind turbines and renewable energy is to reduce our carbon emissions, it is important for every stage of their development to be carried out as efficiently as possible. Here at Apex Hydraulics we are proud to be part of the project to upgrade the MPI Discovery in order to improve its productivity and to ensure that it can undertake the construction of new wind farms in the most efficient manner possible.

We will be manufacturing and installing 9 hydraulic cylinders, incorporating full DNV design appraisal and witness manufacture. The details of the new cylinders will be as follows:

500 Bore x 350 Rod x 2300 Stroke
400 Bore x 250 Rod x 3700 Stroke
400 Bore x 180 Rod x 3200 Stroke

Environmental concerns are important to us here at Apex, and we are proud to do everything we can to increase the efficiency of hydraulics systems in the mining, offshore, recycling and steel industries. Using our on-site workshop we deliver bespoke solutions from initial designs through to on-going maintenance, and are continuously striving to develop new products and techniques to drive forward our own systems and those of our customers.

Project Update

31st May 2013 – as work continues on the MPI Discovery we were recently called upon again and have now completed a further two cylinders to add to those originally commissioned. The new cylinders are 400mm bore x 250mm rod x 3150mm stroke. Being invited to return to this project stands as a testament to the quality of the work originally carried out by the team here at Apex and we were pleased to be able to contribute again to this worthy project.
