The Pieter Schelte Off-Shore Project

The Pieter Schelte is an Allseas vessel designed for heavy duty offshore construction and pipe laying. At a staggering 382m in length, this is the world’s largest catamaran and its construction involves a huge amount of specialist equipment from a mixed team of professionals.

As well as carrying out pipe laying operations, the ship was designed to have the capacity to deconstruct existing offshore structures in the North Sea. With no less than eight diesel generators providing 95MW of power, the Pieter Schelte also has a state of the art system on its bow which enables it to lift the topside of a semi-submerged structure up to a maximum weight of 48,000 tons.

The ship has double the tension capacity of the previous world record holder for pipelay capacity, at an impressive 2,000 tons. It is also capable of laying concrete-coated trunk lines up to 6 feet in diameter from its stern.

Here at Apex Hydraulics we are proud to have been commissioned to design and manufacture a number of hydraulic cylinders to contribute towards this ground breaking project. We have been providing cylinders of this kind to the oil and gas industry for many years, and were happy to share the benefits of our experience with the team at Allseas.
